Chinese cemetery to build a block of 4 classrooms and a teacher’s hostel. It served mainly poor Chinese homes with Chinese as the medium of instruction. Its enrolment soon grew to some 300 pupils. During World War II, the school was destroyed. With the zeal of the Board of Directors, reconstruction work began after the war in 1945. After overcoming great financial difficulties, a new building was rebuilt to serve some 500 pupils.
It moved to Jalan Bukit Merah on 31 August 1984. The school was officially named Zhangde Primary School (Hanyu Pinyin for Chiang Teck) in January in 1985 in recognition of the contributions made by the past principals, teachers, pupils and the School Management Committee. The school population was made up mainly of Pupils from Outram Primary School and Kai Min Primary School, both of which have ceased to function. In 1992, Silat Primary School closed and its pupils joined Zhangde. In 1996, when Keppel Primary School closed its doors, Zhangde absorbed its pupils who have yet to complete their primary education.

On 30 December 2004, Zhangde Primary School once again moved to its new premises at 51 Jalan Membina. To-date, we have an enrolment of 1400 with a staff strength of 70 functioning in two sessions. Today the school caters to the needs of the pupils of the different races in this neighbourhood. We have grown since we moved into our new surroundings and we will continue to grow in all aspects.
We strive to be a Happy Learning School with the mission to nurture thinking individuals and gracious citizens through strategic partnerships with parents and other key players to better serve our stakeholders and the community.
